News from the EXPO 1520 Railway Fair participants

The Engels Locomotive Plant will introduce the Prince Vladimir, its first double-system (AC/DC) freight locomotive, at the EXPO 1520 Fifth Anniversary International Fair of Railway Equipment and Technologies, which will take place between 2 and 5 September 2015 at OAO VNIIZhT’s Railway Testing Loop in Scherbinka, Moscow.

“The freight locomotives our plant will be manufacturing represent the fourth and fifth generation of such equipment”, OOO First Locomotive Company CEO Alexander Strelyukhin said earlier. “We expect them to be in demand for long-haul transportation in Siberia, the Far East and the North. Our freight engines, certified to operate at minus 55 degrees Centigrade, are unrivalled in the world.”

The Engels Locomotive Plant is a joint venture with Canada’s Bombardier Transportation GmbH. No double-system locomotives have been produced in Russia before. The new company’s executives have stated on several occasions that trains of this type would fit in perfectly with Russian railways, where various sections may be electrified differently. Currently, locomotives need to be substituted to cope with this.

Bombardier manufactures various types of locomotive, aircraft (from big airliners to light hydroplanes), and a wide range of spare parts and components. Their products are sold in Canada and 39 other countries.

The Engels Locomotive Plant has already started taking orders. The first 15 two-section locomotives will go to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran. The company’s management is interested in supplying the Russian market too and is in talks with Russian Railways, whose needs for 2015–2017 are estimated by analysts at 1,500 units; the railway company is planning to spend RUB 204 bn for this purpose.

The Fifth International Rail Fair EXPO 1520 will be held at the VNIIZhT Experimental Ring in Sherbinka, Moscow, on 2-5 September 2015. It will be a venue for presenting advanced railway equipment and technologies manufactured by Russian and overseas railway engineering companies. National railway authorities in various CIS, European and Central Asian countries, operators and leasing companies, freight owners and carriers are the key customers of these products. Owing to the high standard of the Fair’s organisation, its unique character and scale in the 1520-gauge area, as well as active involvement of international companies, numerous high-ranking government officials, heads of railway ministries and CEOs of major European corporations visit the event as distinguished guests and delegates. In September 2013, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) acknowledged the international status and superior organisation of EXPO 1520.
