News about EXPO 1520 participants

The United Wagon Company and the American company Timken have signed a partnership agreement

The United Wagon Company (UWC) and Timken (Ohio, USA), the world’s biggest manufacturer of cassette bearings, announced that they have begun long-term cooperation at the IV International Rail Salon of Engineering and Technologies EXPO 1520.

Under the agreement, a new generation of freight wagons manufactured by the Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant on Barber bogies with a 25-tonne axle load will be fitted with Timken axle box cassette bearings and will be included in the Russian Railways field performance programme.

The two companies agreed that 800 Timken 150x250mm bearings will be supplied, for fitting on the Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant’s model 12-9853 drop-bottom gondolas with unloading gates and 25-tonne axle load.

The field performance programme includes commission checks and inspections of the rolling stock equipped with Timken bearings by representatives of Russian Railways, the Vagony Research and Commissioning Centre, and Timken-Rus Service Company (Timken), and also representatives of the owner and manufacturer of the railway equipment. In addition, service centres will be set up to distribute spare bearings on the network.

It is expected that the results of the field performance checks on the wagons will make it possible to confirm improved parameters for the Timken bearings’ fault-free operation and to begin large-scale use of them in the Russian wagon-building market.

Timken bearing units are included in the basic configuration of Barber bogies in the global market and ensure an increased service life for the wheel pair and a high level of operational reliability and safety for the wagon.

Commenting on the agreement, Roman Savushkin, CEO of the United Wagon Company, noted: “The challenges facing the industry today cannot be met without large-scale introduction of innovative technologies. We are endeavouring to provide the market with commercially and technically attractive wagons by applying advanced design solutions in them. Introducing Timken bearings to the Russian wagon-building market is another important step in that direction.”

Mikhail Gorokhov, General Director of Timken-Rus Service Company, a branch of Timken in Russia, added: “The Timken trademark appeared more than 100 years ago and is now known all over the world as a leading supplier of bearings. Today the Russian market for cassette bearings is fairly limited, but the railway industry’s growing interest in developing innovations will inevitably lead to modernisation of the wagon fleet and increasing demand for new-generation components. The Timken company is pleased that its rich experience and knowledge can be useful and that it will help to address the complex challenges facing the railway industry.”
